Massachusetts is one of the strictest states in the U.S in regards to firearms laws. It is strict because many states in the US allow you to purchase a rifle, shotgun and even a handgun without a permit or a license. But this is not the case in Massachusetts. The types of guns fall into three categories in Massachusetts so it has a different set of rules and requirements for different type of gun.
Here are some important things to know about firearms law in Massachusetts
To purchase a rifle or shotgun, you need to obtain a “firearms identification card”. In Massachusetts there are two type of FIDs. One is reserved for rifles, handguns and shotguns while a restricted FID card is reserved for mace and pepper spray. Therefore when getting your FID, ensure that you get it for rifle, handguns and shotguns, if you are planning to purchase these types of weapons. The application that you submit for a rifle, handgun and shotgun is all the same for machine guns. An example of the application for rifle, shotguns, handguns and machine guns can be found here:
Another important thing to know is that the FID can be divided into Class A or Class B type. The Class A type is for any large rifles, shotguns and handguns while Class B is for any non-large rifles, shotguns and handguns. The Class B FID also allows you to carry your handgun but not in a concealed manner. To read up more on this, visit: http://www.nraila.org/statelawpdfs/MASL.pdf
This form is not applicable everywhere in Massachusetts as each county and city has its own forms.
